Tunnels represent potential disaster environments, as they are vulnerable to accidents, gas/fumes emissions, dangerous material transportation, lack of safety and ventilation plants, tunnel profile and visibility. Technology may give precious support to augment safety in both roads and railways tunnels. A new robotic system, purposefully designed to guarantee a rapid intervention and continuous water restocking, is being developed. The system is based on the ROBOGAT patent, consisting on a self-cooling monorail vehicle, mounted on either the tunnel wall or ceiling, carrying a fire-fighting monitor. The rail guarantees continuous water supply and the robot may be either teleoperated or autonomous, by using enhanced sensors as thermal and infrared cameras, pyrometers, gas chromatographs.
